Bloodmobiles have the potential to transform collection operations, but feature
almost nowhere in the blood banking landscapes of Africa and Asia.
With your support, this can change.
Global Blood Fund is working with the UK’s NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) to re-home, initially, five 3-bed bloodmobiles. These low-mileage, modern vehicles have been deemed surplus to requirements following a review of collection strategy in England.
Recognizing the opportunity to dramatically increase collections in some of the world’s poorest countries, GBF has been liaising with blood services around the globe to identify the settings in which these bloodmobiles will add most value. Shortlisted recipients are the national collectors in:
- Sri Lanka
Countries in bold are served by AABB Technical Assistance programs and consequently AABB is kindly encouraging all its members – individual and corporate – to support this initiative. While each vehicle has been valued at $100,000, shipping will cost just a fraction of this figure; $5,000 per unit, representing a tremendous return. As a government-financed monopoly collector, if transport cannot be funded by charitable support NHSBT will have no alternative but to scrap the vehicles.
So AABB and GBF are together asking for your help. By making a contribution to the costs of re-homing, your generosity will ensure that these vehicles continue to perform the role for which they were built – providing a flexible and comfortable environment to encourage donation, serve the needs of patients and save lives.
